A blanket looks simple until a laundry cart comes back. Fleece that felt soft at delivery may be rougher now. The corners can curl. Replacement stock adds up when blankets keep dropping out of rotation. DOTEX Textile’s Jetstar blanket work dates to 2015. On airline runs since then, we’ve had to weigh cabin comfort against fire requirements and the reality of commercial laundry.

Aviation-Grade Soft Goods How Permanent FR rPET Blankets Survive 100+ Industrial Wash Cycles at 90°C

Why Aviation Grade Soft Goods Need More Than Comfort

Put a laundry return beside a fresh blanket. Under the same light, check the pile and binding for wear or a shade change.

The Hidden Cost of Frequent Industrial Laundering

Wear often starts as a small thing. Pills catch the light on fleece. A hem loses its shape. Color looks a little flat beside a fresh blanket. A household wash misses part of the picture: commercial laundry puts heat, operator detergent and mechanical action together. That’s why a home care result tells an airline very little about its own wash room.

Durability as a Procurement Priority

A spare stack uses warehouse space and budget. We look at service life alongside feel, hygiene rules and the operator’s fire specification. The laundry operator can give you the detergent and dryer settings used day to day. Put those on the trial sheet with the temperature.

What Makes a Permanent FR rPET Blanket Different?

Collected PET is processed into polymer first. Only then can it be spun into polyester yarn. Traceable rPET can replace some virgin polyester. The recycled share in a shipment still needs to be documented.

Recycled Polyester from Post Consumer Plastic Bottles

Collection and processing turn used bottles into yarn. Follow the bottle to blanket route. At delivery, check that the material records match the shipment.

Flame Retardancy Engineered into the Fiber

We add flame retardant components to the polymer before spinning. They are part of the yarn, not just a fleece finish. Approval still depends on a test report for the finished blanket and ordered construction.

Balancing Safety, Softness, and Performance

The Jetstar blanket in our program is 160 gsm. Qatar’s example is 180 gsm; EVA Air’s is 220 gsm. GSM gives you a starting comparison, not a feel for the fleece. Get the actual construction in hand and put it through the operator’s laundry routine before fixing the spec.

Comparing Next-Gen Sustainable Solutions: rPET vs. T2T vs. Biodegradable Fleece

While bottle-grade rPET remains the industry workhorse, airline ESG roadmaps increasingly require true closed-loop circularity and microplastic mitigation. Below is how next-generation textile options align with commercial laundry and aviation fire safety standards:

Feature / Metric

1. Standard rPET (Bottle-to-Fleece)

2. T2T Closed-Loop (Fleece-to-Fleece)

3. Biodegradable Aviation Fleece

FAR 25.853: What Buyers Should Verify Before Ordering

FAR 25.853 does not set one test for every cabin material. The applicable requirement depends on material category and use; a loose blanket may be treated differently from an installed panel. Ask the airline which test applies and match its report to the ordered blanket.

Understanding Aviation Vertical Burn Testing

Vertical burn is one method used for aircraft interior materials. Check the sample description against the order. A fabric report may not cover a finished blanket, especially if the color or finish changed.

Requesting the Right Compliance Documents

Keep the lab report beside the purchase specification. Verify the sample against the ordered blanket. If the FR requirement includes laundry, request a post wash result. GRS tracks recycled material; OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 addresses harmful substances. Neither is a fire test report.

How Can Blankets Survive 100+ Industrial Wash Cycles at 90°C?

Our aviation blankets are designed for more than 100 commercial wash cycles at 90°C. EVA Air’s reported result after 100 cycles was zero pilling. It does not confirm wash temperature or post wash FR for every construction; request the matching report.

Engineering for High Temperature Commercial Laundry

Check the blankets after drying. Construction and finish affect the fleece, while shade should stay consistent across lots. Record detergent, load, machine action and dryer settings before cycle one.

What Should a 100 Cycle Wash Test Measure?

Save an unwashed control. At cycle 100, put the washed blanket beside it. Look for pills and shade change. Measure shrinkage and inspect seams; compare fabric strength with the control. Then feel the fleece. Softness is awkward to reduce to a number, yet a passenger can notice the difference in seconds. A “zero pilling” claim should name its rating method.

Does Flame Retardancy Remain Effective After Washing?

A blanket can keep its shape while fire performance changes. If the specification calls for lasting FR, test after the required wash process.

Proven Performance: Lessons from Global Airline Blanket Programs

Since 2015, the running total across our airline programs has passed 27.62 million blankets. The four projects below show different scales; check shipment level claims against their records.

Emirates — ecoThread™ Recycled Blanket Program

We supplied three million blankets for Emirates. At roughly 28 bottles per blanket, the program’s recycled content came to about 84 million bottles. Keeping recycled fiber supply steady was part of delivering a program at that scale.

Qatar Airways — Permanent FR rPET Blankets

The Qatar Airways program reached four million blankets using permanent FR rPET yarn, with reported FAR 25.853 testing. Ask us for the report that matches the ordered weight and finish. A test on one construction should not be carried over to another by assumption.

EVA Air — Industrial Laundry Durability

We supplied two million blankets for EVA Air. The 100 cycle test recorded zero pilling. Useful to know; it is a pilling result. It does not establish a 90°C wash or prove that FR performance remained unchanged after washing.

Jetstar — Recycled Fleece at Scale

The Jetstar program began in 2015 with 420,000 recycled fleece blankets. Project calculations put the bottle equivalent at about 8.4 million. That early order helped move recycled polyester from a material choice into a large airline run.

Traceability and Sustainability Beyond Recycled Content

Why Buyers Need Verifiable Environmental Credentials

Ask for GRS paperwork linked to the supplied lot. The GRS scope and transaction certificate support recycled content traceability. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 covers harmful substances, not recycled content or aircraft fire performance. Check the order documents against DOTEX Textile’s GRS-certified recycled polyester.

How to Choose the Right Aviation Blanket Supplier

Before the purchase order, check the things a sample cannot answer by touch:

Does the lab report identify the same blanket construction?

If required, was FR checked again after the specified wash?

Are the dryer settings recorded after the 90°C wash?

Do the records cover surface pilling and colorfastness alongside dimensions and strength?

Can shipment records trace recycled content to the supplied lot?

Can repeat orders meet the same specification?

Which sustainable feedstock fits your route profile (rPET for high-frequency long-haul, T2T for zero-waste closed-loop programs, or Biodegradable for regional routes)?

It is easier to solve a mismatch during sampling than after bulk production. Our recycled polyester blanket program is a starting point for a specification conversation.

자주 묻는 질문

Q: What is a permanent FR rPET blanket?

Permanent FR components enter the polymer before the yarn is spun. Ask for a test report covering the finished blanket and its intended use.

Q: Can recycled polyester blankets withstand 90°C industrial washing?

Some recycled polyester blankets are built for hot commercial laundry. Check a wash report for the construction and protocol you plan to order.

Q: Does GRS certification prove aviation fire safety compliance?

No. GRS supports recycled material traceability. Fire safety needs separate test evidence for the relevant product and application.

Q: Can Textile-to-Textile (T2T) recycled blankets withstand the same 90°C commercial laundering as rPET?

Yes. By re-engineering sorted airline blanket waste into high-tenacity filament yarns with embedded flame-retardant polymers, T2T fleece passes the identical 100+ commercial wash cycle threshold and FAR 25.853 vertical burn standards.

Q: Will biodegradable polyester blankets degrade or lose strength during regular cabin use or commercial washing?

No. Biodegradable polyester fleece maintains full structural integrity and a 2–3 year shelf life under normal cabin temperatures and dry storage. Degradation is only triggered in active anaerobic microbial/landfill environments (tested per ASTM D5511), leaving zero persistent microplastics.
